On March 28, 2025, at 12:50 PM, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second largest city. The epicenter was about 10 kilometers below the surface, causing extensive damage and causing many deaths and injuries. The earthquake, which occurred near the Sagaing Fault, is estimated to have caused a 460-kilometer-long and 15-kilometer-wide movement along the Sagaing Fault. On April 4, 2025, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) predicted the following aftershocks through April 11:
Aftershocks of magnitude 3 and above are 99% likely (20 to 220 times possible)
Aftershocks of magnitude 4 and above are 99% likely (2 to 22 times possible)
Aftershocks of magnitude 5 and above are 54% likely (0 to 4 times possible)
Aftershocks of magnitude 6 and above are 8% likely (0 to 1 time possible)
Aftershocks of magnitude 7 and above are 0.7% – 1%. Such aftershocks are possible, but the probability is very low.
