On March 28, 2025, at 12:50 PM, the Sagaing earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck Myanmar. The epicenter was about 10 kilometers below the surface, causing extensive damage and causing many deaths and injuries. On April 9, 2025, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) predicted that there was a 42% chance of an aftershock greater than magnitude 5 within the next week, which could cause damage. Up to 160 aftershocks of magnitude 3 or greater could occur within the next week. The frequency of aftershocks will decrease over time, but a strong aftershock could temporarily increase the number of aftershocks. The aftershock probability forecast is now available until April 16.
