Declaration of the National Week of Mourning and Solidarity

April 2, 2025
On March 28, 2025, a major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7, along with several aftershocks, struck Myanmar and neighbouring countries, resulting in significant loss of life and destruction of homes and properties.
The National Unity Government (NUG) was able to fully mobilize search and rescue operations within 72 hours in its controlled territories. However, due to the inability to directly assist in regions under the control of the terrorist military council, the NUG deeply regrets this limitation and extends its sincerest apologies to the affected people.
Since the attempted unlawful seizure of power by the military on February 1, 2021, the people have continuously resisted in various ways to reclaim their rights. Throughout this struggle, they have endured brutal crackdowns by the military across the country.
Due to the terrorist military council’s mismanagement, thousands died during the third wave of COVID-19, and many more lives were unnecessarily lost to natural disasters such as storms and floods. Additionally, countless lives have been taken due to airstrikes, military offensives, and the burning of villages. Even in the wake of this devastating earthquake, the military continues its inhumane airstrikes on a daily basis.
The National Unity Government will never forget these tragic events and remains committed to seeking justice for all those affected.
To support and console one another during this difficult time, the NUG has declared a National Week of Mourning and Solidarity from April 13 to April 20, 2025.
During this period, both domestic and overseas Myanmar communities are encouraged to engage in acts of solidarity and remembrance, either individually or collectively, through the following actions:
1. Expressing condolences and standing in solidarity with earthquake victims and those suffering under military oppression. This can be done by signing condolence books at NUG foreign representative offices, embassies, or designated locations, offering flowers or wreaths, or organizing prayer and remembrance gatherings according to local customs.
2. Holding memorial services, prayers, and acts of remembrance for the deceased and their families. This can include conducting religious ceremonies, and showing support for the injured and bereaved in various ways both inside and outside Myanmar.
3. Collaborating with international individuals, organizations, and governments that are supporting Myanmar to express condolences, solidarity, and prayers together.
