{"id":8049,"date":"2024-09-11T10:52:39","date_gmt":"2024-09-11T04:22:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nug.sjmyanmar.com\/?p=8049"},"modified":"2024-09-11T10:52:39","modified_gmt":"2024-09-11T04:22:39","slug":"item-2-interactive-dialogue-on-the-report-of-the-independent-investigative-mechanism-for-myanmar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nug.sjmyanmar.com\/mm\/item-2-interactive-dialogue-on-the-report-of-the-independent-investigative-mechanism-for-myanmar\/","title":{"rendered":"ITEM 2 \u2013 Interactive dialogue on the report of the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">\u1019\u103c\u1014\u103a\u1019\u102c\u1014\u102d\u102f\u1004\u103a\u1004\u1036<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">10 September 2024<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Republic of the Union of Myanmar, as represented by the National Unity Government, welcomes the interactive dialogue with the Head of the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar, Mr. Nicholas Koumjian, as well as the Mechanism\u2019s latest report to the Human Rights Council.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Confirming another year of \u201cincreasingly frequent and brutal war crimes and crimes against humanity\u201d in Myanmar, Mr. Koumjian told the Council that \u201ccivilians are not just collateral damage but rather the target of attacks, which appear intended to create terror.\u201d<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">As the IIMM reports, this terror is evident in the military junta\u2019s widespread airstrikes against civilians in Chin, Kachin, Karenni, Kayin and Shan States, and its torture of detainees, including through beatings, electric shocks, strangulations, the pulling out of fingernails with pliers, and violent sexual and gender-based crimes.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">In his presentation, Mr. Koumjian also addressed the situation in Rakhine State and reports of killings, torture, rape and the burning of villages. To Mr. Koumjian, while all ethnicities in Rakhine State have suffered, the Rohingya population remains \u201cin a particularly precarious situation\u201d.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The situation in Rakhine State and across Myanmar is one that Mr. Koumjian attributes to \u201cdecades of impunity\u201d.
