Unravelling and starved of territory, cash and legitimacy, the desperate junta is, in the Special Rapporteur’s words, “doubling down on its brutal attacks on civilian populations.”

In his presentation to the Council, the Special Rapporteur gave deserved attention to the situation in Rakhine State, particularly the plight of the Rohingya people. To Mr Andrews, forced conscription, forced displacement and the dire humanitarian situation in Rakhine State carry “echoes of the lead-up to genocidal violence in 2016 and 2017.”

The National Unity Government is fully committed to ensuring that the horrendous atrocities committed against minority communities in Myanmar, including the Rohingya, Rakhine, and others in Rakhine State, are never repeated. All attempts to foment divisions between ethnic communities must end. We will intensify our efforts to build trust, mutual respect, understanding and tolerance.

The Special Rapporteur also issued a clear call on States to act on Myanmar: with the tide turning, “there are opportunities available to your governments right now that would make an enormous difference in how and when this crisis comes to an end.” With international action and support, the Myanmar people will deliver a nation renewed by peace, freedom, justice and equality.

Myanmar thanks the Special Rapporteur for his tireless commitment to its people and to his mandate.

Ministry of Human Rights

National Unity Government

#UNHRC56session

9th July 2024 The Republic of the Union of Myanmar welcomes the interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Mr. Tom Andrews.
